Government Action May Reduce Bicycle Accidents in Portland
Clinton Street in Portland, Oregon, is supposed to be a neighborhood greenway, but after an unusually high number of bicycle accidents were being reported along the street, people started looking into it. A group of activists known as BikeLoudPDX, as well as internal city studies, have determined that Clinton Street was actually seeing higher traffic volumes and speeds than a regular residential street, and it was found that it was being used frequently as a route for commuters who wanted to cut around main streets or highways. Due to the number of homes along the road, they decided that something must be done to help control the flow of traffic.
Mayoral Promises Should Bring About Less Bicycle Accidents
In an experimental move, Mayor Charlie Hales announced that the city would institute a program to create a safer environment for the people and cyclists of Clinton Street. With the use of temporarily installed traffic diverters, the city would be able to block automobile traffic at certain intersections while still allowing bicyclists to use the greenway. However, as of now, the plan has only guaranteed the use of one such diverter.
If the diverters do seem to create a noticeable and positive change, it would be possible for the program to become permanent, as well as include other means of traffic control, such as speed bumps or bicycle lanes. If funding for the project were to increase, similar changes could be seen citywide. The ultimate goal of the government and BikeLoudPDX is to bring the number of bicycle accidents in Portland down to zero.
