Attorney Grabe Secures Massive 600K Settlement for Family of Shooting Victim
Attorney Timothy Grabe has successfully secured a massive $605,000 settlement on behalf of the family of a 57-year-old Southeast Portland man who was shot and killed by his neighbor over speeding in the neighborhood in June 2015.
The defendant, 48-year-old Jon Eric Landis, was sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the fatal shooting of Dean Anthony Kuntz. While Landis initially facing at least 25 years in prison for murder, Attorney Grabe was able to negotiate a plea deal for a lesser sentence in order to ensure Kuntz’s family would receive a wrongful death payout from Landis’ insurance company; a payout which likely would not have occurred if Landis had been convicted of the intentional act of murder.
While the decision to approve a lessened 12-year sentence was difficult for Kuntz’s family, it was ultimately necessary for his widow, Sue Kuntz, to be financially stable in his absence. “Dean Kuntz was the breadwinner,” Attorney Grabe commented. “This will allow [Sue] to live with some dignity for the rest of her life without becoming a burden on her family. That was her goal.”
According to authorities, Kuntz had been upset about drivers speeding through the neighborhood believed to be traveling to or from Landis’ home and had spoken to Landis’ wife six days prior to the killing. On the day of the shooting, Landis had gone to Kuntz’s home to argue about the issue. None of the three eyewitnesses saw Kuntz ever lay a finger on Landis before Landis shot Kuntz.
